Top 4 Best Hybrid Instruction Videos from Martin Chuck

Tip #1: Hitting from a Divot

Follow along with the video or read the transcript beneath to get started.

Overview

Now look what I’ve got here; I’ve got a ball in a divot. Now, when people come to the golf school, I usually tell them, “Be conservative, take something with loft, an 8-iron or a 7-iron, and let’s go ahead and chop that ball outta there and get it back, play and plan from there.”

Basically, lick your wounds and move on.

But - I believe in this club so much, here’s a simple way to get this ball onto the green or way farther down the fairway.

How to Hit From a Divot with the HyLaunch Hybrid

When the ball’s sitting in a hole like this, you have to have a little bit more of a descending strike onto the golf ball, just a tick more attack angle down onto the ball.

Don't be afraid to hit down on it a little bit more when the ball’s in this poor lie. When you hit down on it, the way this leading edge is designed, it’s got a little bit of ski right there that kind of keeps the club from digging - that’s why you need to hit down a bit. The CG is back, it’s low, it’s going to pop the ball straight up into the air.

So I’m going to play the ball just a little bit farther back in my stance, more toward the middle with this club. Normally I’d play a hybrid a little bit more forward, and I’m going to go ahead and enjoy hitting down on this one, expecting a little bit of a divot.

You can see the exchange with the club involved, that little poof of a divot, and that shot was as straight as I can point. So enjoy hitting your HyLaunch Hybrid, the performance is spectacular.

Tip #2: HyLaunch Hybrid Proper Set-Up and Address

Follow along with the video or read the transcript beneath to get started.

Overview

I’m a big fan of the HyLaunch Hybrid clubs, they feel fantastic and I’ll tell ya - I get tons of requests for hybrid tips.

People are confused - is it an iron, is it a wood - well, it’s more of a wood. It’s reminiscent of when I was a little guy and I had a 5-wood. When I look down on this I had the confidence I had when I looked down at my old 5-wood when I was a little guy playing golf and developing my game.

Proper Set-Up and Address

Now you’ll see I have a tee square on the ground. Why is a tee square important to me?

It gives me certainty on where I aim and it helps me move my ball location. For you to develop your skills with your HyLaunch, I want you to use a couple of aim sticks to again build in that certainty.

When you walk into this shot, I want you to take your trail foot - in my case my right foot - and we’re going to put it on the ball line, the skinny white stick.

We’re going to set the HyLaunch Hybrid behind the ball, go ahead and aim that face.

You’ll notice that I’ve got a little bit of a dimension, I’ve got structure in my arms, I have a mild reach. Nothing excessive, but I’ll tell you what - I’m not standing there with the club on the ground with elbows that are separated in a deep squat here because that’s what a lot of people do and that’s not what’s going to help you hit your best shots.

So we’re going to be a little too far away from the golf ball, one little step with your trail foot, find the sweet spot of your HyLaunch Hybrid, set it to the golf ball. Notice how I get the structure of my arms in place.

From there, we can tap the grass, set your left foot for ball location, drop your right foot back for stance width, and that’s a pretty good position to go ahead and hit a shot. I like to waggle to relax a little bit and then go ahead and send one. Enjoy that ball flight with your HyLaunch Hybrid.

So that’s a very simple way to give you certainty for structure at address. As the great Jack Michlaus said, “90% of all shots are at address”

I think we can afford to spend a little time on that too, and it’s going to help you hit your HyLaunch Hybrid all the better.

Tip #3: How to Create Solid Impact

Follow along with the video or read the transcript beneath to get started.

Overview

I get all kinds of questions about the hybrid - do I hit down on it, do I hit it like a wood - now think about this.

The golf swing is an incline circle. It is not a merry-go-round that goes around parallel to the ground, nor is it a ferris wheel that goes in a circle that’s vertical to the ground.

This is a relationship where the golf club travels equal parts back up and in, down out and forward, but you want to touch the ball a little bit before we touch the grass.

Here’s the beautiful thing, there’s some insurance built into this club. If you happen to hit it a little fat, the club skids beautifully as it has this design here at the leading end elevated a little bit.

But this is a shot where the club where the club works down and out to the bottom of the circle ideally touching the golf ball before we touch the grass.

How to Create Solid Impact

So for a lot of you out there, don’t try to help this up in the air. Get organized over the golf ball.

Imagine that circle equal parts back up an in, down up to the ball, touching the ball brushing the grass.

If you have that visual - let’s have a little shot here - maybe even take a little baby divot after impact. Watch that ball fly beautifully in the sky, and you’ll notice I purposefully disrupted the grass a little bit after impact.

That downward strike adds a bit of spin, adds some launch, you’re going to hit some great shots with your HyLaunch Hybrid.

Tip #4: Slice Fix with a Tee

Follow along with the video or read the transcript beneath to get started.

Overview

Most of you struggle with a slice, and a slice is a combination of grip and wrist condition issues. What's funny is once you start playing golf, you’re always trying to fix that.

So if you came to the golf school, let me show you to help you understand. I'm going to take a tee and put it into the fold of my glove. Fold this in here night and tight, fit it in, and we’ll talk about wrist conditions because I want you to understand how this works.

So when you get a functional grip, when we spend a lot of time caring for how you put your hands on the club nicely, it’s your attachment to what you’re swinging, and I’m swinging off a hybrid I love.

But take a look at what’s happening with this tee right here. When I come down and transition, watch the tee. If I start to let the tee point skyward, that club face is opening, that’s a mayday alert to my brain, I have to stand up and have to roll my hands in the last moments of a swing.

A golf swing is about 1-1.3 seconds long. If you’re responding in that little teeny window of time, that 0.2 - 0.3 seconds there, you are never going to never be reliable.

Here’s what you need to do to fix that slice once and for all, and the HyLaunch is going to help you.

How to Fix a Slice

Let’s take it to the top and watch this tee.

Notice I’m starting to point that tee more behind me, in fact I’m pointing it more to the camera you’re watching me from. What that’s doing it’s building a stronger clubface relationship, getting the weight of the club behind me.

When it’s behind me, my body can want to rotate and the beauty of this is the clubhead orbits inside out - you don’t have to artificially try to swing inside out.

So the key to this - let’s get to the top, let’s take that tee, let’s point the tee behind us. You can see what it does to the face and where it puts the club.

Now from here if we unwind a little bit, we have a draw built in, and you can kiss your slice goodbye once and for all.

Get organized, go to the top, pause, feel that, move a couple of times. When you’ve got that down let’s go ahead and hit a little shot.

You can enjoy that beautiful, non-slicey baby draw.
